Ubin Survivor Recce, 10 Aug 2008

Joining members from Toa Payoh Adventure Club, we went for a recce at Pulau Ubin, for a program for their facilitators.

On the bum boat journey to the island, we saw this sign on the boat...

"All passengers ______ Whilst Boat is Moving"

All passengers, please fill in the blanks, if you got the correct answer, the trip is free for you....

Upon reaching the island, we went to IK to collect the latest map.

We saw a beautiful cat, seating nicely on the rock, and posing for Jo.

And bad weather ahead of us, waiting for our arrival.

That is one of the reason why we did not cover alot of areas for this trip.

Jelutong Camp site, which is one of the biggest official campsite on the island.

With the size of the ground, it is an ideal place for games, gathering, camps, and getting people together.

With a big area, finding a place to pitch a tent will not be a problem.

Campfire places are available at the campsite.

Of course, you have to keep the campfire clean & tidy after use.

"Mirror Mirror on the pole"

Needless to say, we got fatter..

At the turning point of Jalan Jelutong, we saw this graceful turtle in the drain, with fishes swimming around him.

Jo said that she saw this turtle every time she cycle passed the drain.. but its my first time seeing him.

This is what i call "innovation".
Going Back to basic is what we need in every aspect of life;
This is a good place for us to learn about life.

Found this at Wei Tuo Fang Gong.

Trace of Wild Boar

Goddess of Mercy created out of natural formation at Ubin Quarry.

Offering made to the Goddess of Mercy, asking for blessing.

Our last stop is ketam Quarry before we head back to the jetty to declare an end to the day.

~Discovery during my Ubin Volunteer Orientation Program ~

Finally, the thing that I have been long waiting for, has happened.
And that is, to join Ubin Volunteer.

Some thinks that I am crazy.. some thinks that I am nuts..
but whats wrong being a volunteer for a place I love and belong?

Its a whole new experience being a participant to a place that i do my tours.
In fact, I got more information that I expected.

More than that, I caught up with some old friends (Billy & Susanna), and meet some new ones like Esmond, Kimsong and Lawrence.

We met a interesting friend on the island as well, his name is Green-Green.

Green-Green, standing proudly, posing for us for photos.

Green-Green, like an Indian dancer, popping his head out of the Pandan leaf

Another interesting information that I gathered is that, Singapore is small.
And Pulau Ubin is just a short distance from the city centre.

Looking out from ketam Quarry area,
we can see the Singapore Flyer & the 3 tallest building in Singapore: UOB Plaza One, OUB Centre and Repubic Plaza, each measure 280 metre.

For more information about the 3 tallest buildings in Singapore, you can refer to here.

Another interesting detail I discovered is that we have a Qi Gong Master on the island. He not only know Qi Gong, he knows Kung Fu as well.He is able to stick empty soft drinks cans onto the wall, without damaging them.
Look at how good his skill is, only the 1st can was dented slightly, but nothing happened to the rest.
So if you thinking about creating trouble on the island, think again.
You might be the next to be on the wall.

Great Singapore Sales in Pulau Ubin

This month, in conjunction with Great Singapore Sales, the island is giving away from gifts!!
This promotion greatly increase the visitors rate of the island.

With every S$2.50 you pay for the boat trip into the island, and a small fee for the rental of bicycles, you are entitled to move around the island to choose your delightful King of Fruits, the durian, FOR FREE ! You can take as many as you want, regardless of the shape size or color.

Yes, its the durian season and explorers from different parts of Singapore, are coming over to the island for their durian hunt.

The durian season will be over in 2 to 3 weeks time (i guess the same time as Great Singapore Sales), so what are you waiting for ?? Go for the hunt !! Oh yes, please save the environment, bring along your recycle bags, and you know, one is never enough.

Thats all folks. Till then,
I see you when I see you.

23 May 2008 - Tua Pek Gong Temple Celebration

This blog is about a tour for myself, on the celebration in the Pulau Ubin Tua Pek Gong Temple.

2008 is the first year that Pulau Ubin Tua Pek Gong Temple holds such a major celebration for the residents of the island, and also for the devotees of the temple. Flags and lanterns can be seen hanging along the way from the jetty to the town; Chinese opera performance, Ge-tai performance can be seen to fill that quiet night of the island.

To bad, i miss out the Ge-Tai performance, but... I did not miss out the day view of whats going on behind the scene.

There will be another celebration for the Tua Pek Gong coming up in the next few months.
Till then, I will update about the prayer's celebration.

Nature Walk @ Pulau Ubin, 17 May 2008

This is my first entry of my Pulau Ubin Tour after so many time of conducting of such tours.

Usually, the number of participants ranges from 4 pax to 8 pax, but this time round, we have a break through; There are 9 participants!

For this trip, we have a couple of break through:
- 9 participants
- Visit to Ketam Mountain Bike Park
- Seen Pulau Ubin decorated for Vesak Day C elebration

After introduction of the tours @ Betel Box, we headed for the bus stop. The 50 minutes bus journey breaks the ice among the participants.
Arriving at Changi Village, we break off for lunch, with the participants trying the local delights.
Bum boat ride increase from S$2.00 to S$2.50, but that does not prevent people from entering the island.

Upon reaching the island, we were welcomed with religious flag decorated for Vesak Day celebration. According to the locals, 2008 is the first time where the village put up such decoration with helps from sponsors who love the island.

Bike, a human-powered tool to move around the island, gives some of the participants a real-time adventure experience as they have not been on bikes for ages.

A Get Away from the city gives everyone a different view about Singapore, and have their weekend fully charged up with fresh air and positive energy.

Too bad this time round I did not take much pictures, but certainly for the rest of the upcoming tours, I will include more pictures for the reader's view.
